Dorothy
Ramon Learning Center
The purpose of the Center is to save and share the
American Indian Cultures of southern California. California
has the largest number of different Indian languages and cultures.
There are many reservations scattered over southern California,
yet even nearby residents know little about them. The Center
seeks to document and preserve native languages, histories,
music, basketry, pottery and other traditional arts. With
our building in downtown Banning, we are able to better share
this important part of our national heritage. When the building
is remodeled we’ll have a reference library and archive,
recording studio, gathering hall for events, children’s
center, display space, and gift shop.
The Learning Center is named for Dorothy
Ramon, one of the last speakers of the Serrano language. In
her last years she worked with a linguist and, together, they
wrote a grammar for the language and recorded many of her
memories and stories. She symbolizes those Indian elders who
were steeped in their cultures and willing to share this knowledge.
